Proposition 73 would amend the state constitution to require parents to be notified by health care providers before female minors receive abortion services, which in my opinion, is completely absurd! This initiative would supposedly increase parental involvement, and hold men (18 and older) and abusers legally responsible for their actions, which I'm totally in favor of.
In an ideal world, all men would be responsible for their actions, and every parent would serve as the optimal paradigm. Before we vote on this proposition, we really need to think about reality. Unfortunately, there are too many children who are not being socialized in their home, and inevitably rely on public services to pick up the slack (my father was a high school teacher...I know!). Abuse and neglect are commonplace, and many teens find it difficult to communicate with their parents. Quite often, parents have the best intentions, but underestimate or fail to meet the basic needs of their children. This initiative would be a blatant advance against the rights of young women. With my field of study in mind, I feel qualified to say that all public organizations are required to report any abuse, and provide appropriate counseling when free or low cost reproductive medicine is administered. In fact, California strongly enforces health care workers to report any suspected abuse and/or neglect of a patient. I'm happy to say that most major medical and civil rights organizations (such as the American Medical Association, the American Academy of Pediatrics, Planned Parenthood, the American Academy of Family Physicians, and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists) oppose this atrocity. Supporters of Prop 73 include a small handful of conservative doctors and large business owners, but the vast majority of the health care work force are in opposition.Category: General()
